China considers levy of green tax on textile industry, the largest source of pollution

In China's textile industry is an important industry, but the textile industry's unique ability to compete against competitors' prices has paid a huge cost. According to the monitoring report of the 2006 China Geological Environment Association, 70% of rivers, lakes and reservoirs in China are polluted. Although government officials recently acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, industrial emissions of toxic substances, persistent substances, and bioaccumulative substances have shown no signs of abating.

In China's textile industry is an important industry, but its unique ability to compete in the price of competitors has paid a huge cost.

How to collect green taxes remains to be seen, especially after rising wages and falling exports. In November, Joseph Lau, deputy chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, said that in January of next year, the minimum wage in the Pearl River Delta may increase by 16% to 20%. This means that local textile companies may expect a sharp rise in the labor force, coupled with higher prices of raw materials, companies that are highly labor-intensive and produce basic textiles will face significant challenges.

All eyes are on this week's climate talks in Durban, South Africa. The world is holding its breath and waiting for China to think about its next move.

According to news released by Ecotextile News on Tuesday, the Chinese textile industry may face a new green tax, although the world's largest polluters are striving to achieve their 2015 environmental goals. In order to increase the chances of achieving the goal, the State Council of China will actively promote environmental-related taxes and conduct research on the collection of environmental taxes.

Although China stated that China’s goal is to reduce its energy consumption per GDP (US$1,570) by 16% by 2015, it is equivalent to a reduction of 670 million tons of coal processing. But in fact, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, nitrous oxide emissions, the main pollution, rose by 6.17% each year.
