Indian apparel companies open up Vietnam market

Representatives of the Indian Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) Indian apparel and textile trading company representatives met with senior officials of Vietnamese companies in Ho Chi Minh City to develop new trade and investment opportunities.

Premal Udani, president of AEPC, said that the purpose of the Indian delegation is to understand Vietnam's garment production, garment industry productivity, production facilities, and the Vietnamese government's labor policies and incentives for the apparel industry.

He added that the delegation’s visit to Vietnam may lead to a cooperative dialogue between the two parties, including the conclusion of a joint venture agreement.

He said that AEPC is preparing to develop an exchange plan so that Vietnamese students can participate in courses offered by the Indian Institute of Fashion Management.

Mr. Udani added that the committee is also preparing to help Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) train its employees through quality control technology, production technology, merchandise management, computer pattern making and other training programs in various fields.

Mr. Pham Gia Hung, Director of the Ministry of External Affairs of VITAS said that there are 3,710 textile and garment companies in Vietnam, of which 70% produce clothing. He added that Vietnam's weaving, spinning, and printing and dyeing companies are not yet strong enough.

He said that Vietnam encourages the localization rate to be raised. Within the current five-year development plan (by 2015), Vietnam will increase investment and promote raw material production.
