Zafar Mahmud, Minister of Commerce of Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of Commerce, issued a statement that discussions with industry stakeholders on India’s MFN status may soon be over and Mr. Aziz responded to this statement.
At a consultative meeting organized by the APTMA office in Punjab, Mr. Mahmoud said that after consultations, the issue will be submitted to the cabinet for approval.
He stressed that the formalization of trade with India is a very important issue at present, but he said that Pakistan’s industry and India’s non-tariff barriers are also worrying.
He pointed out that developed countries have always maintained political differences in the Gulf to maintain their trade relations. He cited the EU and Turkey, China and Taiwan, Hong Kong and China as examples.
Mr. Mahmoud said that the Minister of Commerce relied on consultations with industry players to determine the future course of action. This may lead Pakistan and India to reach a formal agreement on trade on an equal footing.
According to Mr. Mahmood, Minister of Commerce Mahendum Aminfachim recently visited India and the minister proposed to abolish non-tariff barriers as a permanent solution to the formalization of trade with India.
He also said that the second round of consultations may begin soon, and he is optimistic about this. The two countries will friendly geography clear all trade barriers.
He also praised India for its support for the European Union’s proposal to grant trade preferences for 75 Pakistani products.
He added that Pakistan looks forward to India’s support for Pakistan’s GSP+ plus incentives in 2014.
