Bo Baiman series: The wealth of flying fingers

On the morning of September 13th, he stepped into Bobai County Xinyi Weaving Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd., and the sight of banana leaves stacked high in the warehouse immediately caught the reporter’s attention. The company's chairman, Chen Ying, smiled and explained: "These banana leaves are actually one of our key raw materials used to create traditional woven crafts." He added that, in addition to common materials like reeds and vines, the company also utilizes what many might consider waste—such as banana leaves, water calabash, and more—to create unique and sustainable products. Bobai is widely known as the "Capital of Chinese Weaving Arts and Crafts." Historical records show that its folk weaving traditions date back to the Song Dynasty. In the fall of 1979, two sets of exquisite handmade crafts from Bobai made their debut at the Canton Fair, earning widespread praise from foreign buyers and leading to a surge in orders. From that moment on, Bobai's weaving craftsmanship gained international recognition, and its products were soon exported to Southeast Asia and Europe and America. Today, the weaving industry has become one of the key pillars of Bobai’s economy. The county has evolved into the largest export base for woven crafts in China. With nearly 400 weaving companies operating in the area, the variety of products has expanded significantly. Initially focused on traditional bamboo weaving, the industry now incorporates materials like mango wood, bamboo, rattan, paper rope, and even metal. Last year alone, the weaving industry generated an output value of 1.09 billion yuan, with over 200,000 farmers involved in the sector. On average, each farmer earned more than 1,000 yuan through weaving, making it a vital source of income and a symbol of rural prosperity. Not content with its current success, Bobai has ambitious plans for the future of its weaving industry. At the Chengdong Industrial Park, construction was in full swing, with excavators working and workers laying brick walls. According to reports, once completed, this industrial park will house large-scale weaving enterprises, forming a strong industrial cluster and driving the industry toward new growth. Additionally, the park will include a grand exhibition center where the latest woven products will be showcased to both domestic and international buyers. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," one of the key goals for Bobai's weaving industry is to develop five companies with annual outputs exceeding 100 million yuan and ten more with over 50 million yuan. This strategy aims to elevate the status of "China Weaving Arts and Crafts Capital" and make its brand even more prominent on the global stage.
