Macau's consumer price index climbed 6.02% in November

In November 2010, the Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Macau rose by 3.93% compared to the same month in 2009, reflecting a general upward trend in consumer prices. This increase was primarily driven by higher costs in several key categories, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, miscellaneous goods, services, and transportation. The overall rise in prices during the first 11 months of the year stood at 2.71%, while for the full 12 months ending in November, the average CPI increased by 2.54%. Notably, specific categories saw significant price hikes. Miscellaneous goods and services experienced the highest growth at 6.71%, followed closely by clothing and footwear (6.02%) and medical care (5.79%). Transportation also saw a rise of 5.72%, while food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 5.00%. Recreational and cultural activities also climbed by 3.71%. These increases were largely attributed to rising prices for gold jewelry, men's and children's clothing, women's shoes, fuel, fresh fish, and expenses related to outpatient visits, dining out, and travel. On the other hand, the communication sector saw a decline of 3.60% due to reduced mobile phone service charges. The CPI for Category A, which covers about 50% of households with an average monthly expenditure between 6,000 and 18,999 patacas, increased by 3.65%. Meanwhile, Category B, representing approximately 30% of households with higher spending (19,000 to 34,999 patacas), saw a 4.06% increase. Looking at the monthly change, the composite CPI rose by 0.45% from October to November. This was mainly due to higher prices for autumn and winter clothing, gasoline, and LPG. As a result, the cost of clothing and footwear increased by 3.37%, while transportation and housing-related costs rose by 0.99% and 0.94%, respectively. However, some items saw price declines, such as fresh seafood and vegetables, along with lower tour group fees, leading to a 0.37% drop in food and non-alcoholic beverages and a 0.28% decrease in recreation and culture expenses. The Composite CPI is calculated using a new base period from April 2008 to March 2009, providing a comprehensive view of inflation trends affecting the general population in Macau. These indices help policymakers and residents understand how daily living costs are evolving, offering valuable insights into economic conditions and purchasing power.
