New technology is expected to significantly reduce the cost of deep ultraviolet LED

Ritsumeikan University of Japan recently issued a statement saying that its researchers have developed a technology that can efficiently produce deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at a very low cost, and is expected to become a deep ultraviolet light widely used by the United Nations after restricting the use of mercury. light source.

Light with a wavelength of 200 nm to 350 nm in ultraviolet light is called deep ultraviolet light, and is widely used in air sterilization, air treatment, and formaldehyde treatment in clean water plants, hospitals, and factory dust-free workshops. In the past, many deep ultraviolet light sources used mercury lamps, but the United States last year organized the Water Margin Convention to significantly limit the use of mercury, so it is necessary to develop alternative light sources.

Deep UV LEDs can be used to replace mercury lamps, but in the past, deep sapphire LEDs were used to make deep sapphire substrates, and the high cost limits the popularity. Tachibana University senior researcher Qingliu Kexin and others reported that cheaper silicone can be used as a substrate instead of sapphire, which can significantly reduce costs.

In addition, in the past, in order to allow current to pass, it is necessary to peel off a part of the insulating layer on the substrate. The new method is to attach a layer of aluminum nitride as an insulator on the silicone substrate, and then open a plurality of micropores on the top to allow current to pass. This eliminates the need to peel off the insulating layer, which greatly shortens the process. The previous five days of fabrication can be shortened to one day, and the damage to the LED when the insulating layer is peeled off is avoided, and the luminous efficiency is also improved.

The research team believes that the new method can significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of deep ultraviolet LEDs, and is expected to promote the mass production and wide application of such deep ultraviolet light sources.
