China's garment industry has gone through 30 years of reform and opening up, gradually forming a clothing market with distinct Chinese characteristics. As one of the key industries driving China's economic growth, the apparel sector has increasingly gained recognition on the global stage in recent years. Wu Jianmin, chairman of Shandong Shulang Garment Co., Ltd., is one such figure who has played a significant role in shaping the industry. During a visit by Li Jinhua, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), to Shandong Shulang Clothing & Accessories Co., Ltd., Wu Jianmin shared insights into the company’s operations, production, and future plans. Over the years, Shulang has evolved from a small enterprise into a well-established brand known for its design, development, and manufacturing capabilities. The company's success stems from its commitment to respecting tradition while embracing innovation, supported by strong financial backing, advanced technology, efficient management, and the dedication of its workforce. Today, Shulang is recognized as a leading northern women’s wear brand in China and has made a name for itself in the global fashion industry. In recent years, the company's rapid growth has helped promote the North China women's fashion movement internationally. During an interview on July 30, Wu Jianmin also highlighted his roles as vice chairman of the National Association of Industry and Commerce Textile and Apparel Chamber of Commerce, vice chairman of the Shandong Garment Industry Association, and president of the Yantai Clothing Industry Association. Wu, who was raised near the North Sea, has always had a deep connection with modern women's fashion. More than a decade ago, he founded Shulang with his own initiative. Today, the brand not only holds the title of the top northern women’s fashion brand in China but has also become one that aligns with international standards. According to Wu, understanding the Chinese garment industry requires understanding the textile sector. During the planned economy era, the textile industry received more attention due to its importance to the national economy and people's livelihood, which left the apparel industry less prioritized in the early stages of reform and opening up. However, this situation created a unique environment that allowed the garment industry to develop strong survival capabilities and fostered many successful entrepreneurs. Wu believes that the Chinese garment industry is still in its developmental phase compared to global counterparts. One of the main challenges is the lack of talent and independent branding. Therefore, "cultivating talent and promoting independent innovation" should be a priority for garment companies. From a national perspective, Shandong ranks fourth in total textile output, with a primary focus on large-scale foreign trade and smaller domestic sales. To grow stronger, the garment industry in Shandong and across the country must shift towards domestic sales and build strong brands. Unlike many other Chinese clothing companies, Shulang focuses solely on domestic sales, with limited imports of raw materials and equipment. Wu emphasizes that creating independent, Chinese-characteristic enterprises will help the world gain a fresh perspective on the Chinese garment industry. Currently, Shulang employs over 4,000 people, operates 60 senior ladies' production lines, and has 950 installed units (machines). The company uses a modern computer-aided design system and highly automated cutting and sewing machines. It also imports and processes 1.2 million haute couture pieces from Japan, Germany, and other countries.
