"Hometown of White Willow" Craftsmanship Willow Weaving Leads Low Carbon Life

"‘The water is clear, the mountains are green, and the beauty of nature is breathtaking; the clouds are light, the wind is gentle, and the sky feels refreshing.’ On July 19, 2010, a group of students from the Science and Innovation Center at Shanghai Jiaotong University embarked on a social practice trip to Linyi County in Linyi City, known as the 'Capital of Liubian.' Their mission was to explore and study the traditional folk art of Liubian, an ancient craft that has been passed down for centuries. ‘A few willows weave dreams with skill,’ the saying goes. Linyi Liubian dates back over 1,400 years to the early Tang Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a mature industry with a complete production chain. The craft has even won prestigious awards such as the ‘Golden Dragon Ascension Award for Outstanding Products’ from the State Ministry of Light Industry and the ‘Hundred Flowers Award for Arts and Crafts’ in Shandong Province. The practice group visited Baiji Town, the so-called 'Home of White Willows,' where they saw vast fields of tamarisk trees swaying gently in the breeze. As they walked through the town, they were greeted by the sight of local farmers working on their wicker products. The villagers shared stories about how Liubian has become a vital part of their daily lives. Every household grows tamarisks and weaves Liubian items, which are then collected by village factories and processed before being sold across the country. In Yushu Village, the group visited Yushu Liubian Factory, where Director Liu Zichao welcomed them. He explained the factory’s operations and its role in driving the local economy. The factory works closely with farmers who grow and weave the raw materials, while the factory handles the finishing work like dyeing and packaging. This model creates a circular supply chain, connecting farmers, the factory, and customers. Liu also emphasized the importance of innovation. The factory actively develops new designs and uses online platforms like Taobao to reach a broader market. “Our website is doing very well,” he proudly said. In the showroom, there were thousands of samples—ranging from wicker furniture to handicrafts and tools—showcasing the diversity of the craft. However, challenges remain. Funding issues and limited production capacity make it hard to take on large orders. Additionally, the lack of industry standardization affects the sector’s bargaining power. Despite these obstacles, the growing trend toward low-carbon and eco-friendly lifestyles is giving Liubian a new opportunity. As more people become environmentally conscious, natural crafts like Liubian are gaining popularity, and I believe they will soon be seen as must-have, sustainable products." (Word count: 538)
